Spider-Mannotations: Amazing Spider-Man #670, Venom #7, Herc #8, Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #2

Bust out those backissues and hardcovers, Spider-fans, because it's time to look at another chunk of Spider-Island!

Amazing Spider-Man #670

Another cover homage - this time to Amazing Spider-Man #646!

Page 9: Our Lady of Saints Church has a special significance for Eddie Brock - it's where, while contemplating suicide, he was bonded with his alien symbiote (which Spider-Man had rid himself of with the aid of the church's bells) and became Venom!  It's also where he tried to kill Spider-Man in their first full encounter in Amazing Spider-Man #300.

"Jeez, I thought that Topher Grace kid would never leave."
(Amazing Spider-Man #300, written by David Michelinie, art by Todd McFarlane)

Page 13: Marla Madison, J. Jonah Jameson's wife, was killed in a Spider-Slayer attack in ASM #653 - which is kinda ironic, given that she and Jameson met when he hired her to design a Spider-Slayer for him.

Page 17: This is Alistair Smythe, now calling himself the Spider-Slayer - he personally killed Marla when she intercepted a blow meant for Jonah.

No funny caption here.  This was actually super-sad.
(Amazing Spider-Man #654, written by Dan Slott and Fred Van Lente, art by Stefano Caselli)
Page 18: Jameson pulled the strings to have Smythe sentenced to death in ASM #656.

Page 19: Misty Knight, bionic-arm-sporting bounty hunter, is currently leading a new incarnation of Heroes For Hire.

Silver Sable is Silver Sablinova, a mercenary from the made-up eastern European nation Symkaria. Due to political instability in her homeland, she's currently exiled to New York City.  Since first appearing in ASM #265, she's hired Spider-Man to work for her a number of times, usually resulting in her not paying him due to some technicality.  She's kind of mean.

Paladin, identity unknown, is a purple-clad mercenary. He's met Spider-Man several times; they generally aren't fond of each other, due to Paladin's mercenary nature.  Spider-Man doesn't like him because he charges money to help people, and he doesn't like Spider-Man because he gives it away for free.

See?

Venom #7

"Mistletoe can be deadly, if you eat it."  "But a kiss can be deadlier...if you mean it."
(art by Tony Moore)
Creative Team: Rick Rememnder (writer), Tom Fowler (art)

Page 11: As seen in the New Ways to Die crossover, the Anti-Venom symbiote is poison to regular symbiotes.

The heartbreak of psoriasis.

Herc #8

"When they said I'd be fighting Hydra, I was kind of hoping for those guys in green pajamas."
(art by Carlo Pagulayan)
Creative Team: Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente (writers), June Brigman (pencils), Roy Richardson (inker)

Page 16: Anansi has actually cropped up in the Spider-books before - during J. Michael Straczynski's run, Spider-Man encountered an entity that may have been Anasi in the astral plane; later, the mysterious Ezekiel told Spider-Man Anansi's origin story.

He cannot reach the mangos but he longs to have a bite.
(Amazing Spider-Man (volume 2) #48, written by J. Michael Straczynski, art by John Romita Jr. and  Scott Hanna)

Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #2

You're not Sylvia!  You're one of the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu...Two!
(art by Sebastian Fiumara)

Creative Team: Antony Johnston (writer), Sebastian Fiumara & Leandro Fernandez (pencils), John Lucas (inker)

Page 2: The "old friend" in question is Shen Kuei, alias the Cat, a freelance spy who has fought against and alongside Shang.  He first appeared in Master of Kung Fu #38.

Page 3: Yes, as per Doug Moench's long-running Master of Kung Fu series, Shang is a big Fleetwood Mac fan.

Page 18: Ai Apaec, alias the Decapitator, is a shapeshifting deity found in the iconography of the ancient Moche people of Peru.  He first appeared in comics in Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios' Osborn series, where he was one of the prisoners in a super-villain jail.  Lately, he's joined Norman Osborn's new Avengers, using his shapeshifting powers to appear as a six-armed Spider-Man.

And that's it!  Join us next time (and Anansi knows when that'll be) for Amazing Spider-Man #671, Black Panther #524, and Spider-Island: Heroes for Hire #1!
